26. After the test
/page 59/
„Congratulations, Miss Buckingham. I´m pleased to tell you that you´ve passed your test.“ /teší ma, že vám môžem oznámiť, že ste urobili váš test/
/page 59/
Natalie smiled in surprise /sa prekvapene usmiala/. She thought /myslela si/ that she had driven quite well during the test /že počas testu bola celkom dobrá/, but wasn´t sure if she had been good enough to pass. /ale nebola si istá, či bola dosť dobrá, aby prešla/.
/page 59/
Davie would be pleased for her. David was her driving instructor. She´d really enjoyed her lessons with him and she thought that he´d enjoyed teaching her.
/page 59/
He smiled and laughed a lot during their lessons. He was always very tolerant with her mistakes and never got angry. /nikdy nebol nahnevaný/ Natalie knew that tolerance and friendliness /vľúdnosť/ were an important part of his job, but she thought that he must be a nice person in his personal life too. And, as her mum /ako jej matka/ had said, „He´s not bad-looking /nevyzerá zle/, your instructor!“
/page 59/
The examiner gave her a pass certificate and then they both got out of the car. David was coming across the park to meet her. He could see from her smile that she had passed.
/page 59/
„Well done, Natalie! I knew you could do it! Come on, I´ll drive you home. You know it isn´t a good idea to dreve yourself home afater your test.“
/page 59/
They got into the car. „Your mum will be pleased,“ said David.
He was right.
It was mum who had paid for the lessons for Natalie´s 17th birthday. She had done overtime /robila presčasy/ at work to save the money. As a single mother, she had always found it hard /považovala za ťažké/ to pay for ´extras´ like /zaplatiť niečo extra ako/ Christmas presents and holidays, but she had always managed it. /zurechtkommen/
/page 60/
Natalie looked at David as he drove. She didn´t usually get the chance to look at him because she usually had to concentrate on the road. „Mum was right,“ she thought, „he is handsome /gut aussehend/. And funny. And charming.“ /očarujúci/
/page 60/
Natalie felt nervous. She had a question to ask David and she wasn´t sure how he would react /nebola si istá, aká by bola jeho reakcia/. But this was her last chance. There would be no more driving lessons now. „Well,“ she thought, „it´s now or never.“ /teraz, alebo nikdy/
/page 60/
„David, there´s something I want to ask you. You don´t wear a wedding ring and you´ve never said anything about a wife or girlfriend. Are you single?“
„Er, yes.“ David looked uncomfortable /unbehaglich, cítil sa nepríjemne/.
„Good.“
„Why?“ David sounded nervous /znel nervózne/
„Well, mum said I could have a party tonight if I passed my test – and I´d like to invite you.“
„Goodness, Natalie, I´ve really enjoyed teaching you and you´re a lovely girl… but I´m 39! I´m old enough to be your father!“
„Yes, exactly! I´ve got a 37-year-old motherat home who´d love to get to know you!“ /ktorá by vás rada spoznala/ 🙂
